About the DigiTech X-Series
The more time I spend around the X-Series, the more I love and appreciate what DigiTech was trying to do here.
This line has always felt like one of those really interesting crossroads moments in pedal history. You can still feel some of the older DOD and DigiTech DNA in it, but at the same time it was obvious they were reaching for something more modern. The shape, the way the knobs were laid out, the overall feel in your hand. These were meant to feel fresh when they hit the wall at the music store.
And honestly, they still do.
As I write this, I have all 10 pedals on my workbench for inspiration and I can't wipe the smile off of my face.
What I have always loved about the X-Series is how wide the line really was. Some of these are just great honest workhorse pedals that do exactly what you need them to do. Then you get into things like the Factory pedals, and suddenly DigiTech is giving players a whole collection of sounds in one box. Back then, that felt pretty exciting. In a lot of ways, it still does.
The deeper I get into collecting them, the more the little details start to tell the real story. Early USA-made examples have their own feel. Later China-built pedals can feel different in subtle ways. Sometimes the casting changes. Sometimes the weight changes. Sometimes you open one up and find one of those hidden steel plates taped inside the bottom cover just to make it feel a little more substantial in somebody's hand at the store.
Those are the things that make this line fun for me.
Not just the sounds, but the quiet little production decisions nobody was ever supposed to notice twenty years later.
That is really what this section of the site is about. Sure, the pedal pages cover the sounds, controls, specs, and collector notes. But the bigger story is watching how this line evolved over time as real physical objects. Different factories, different runs, small cost-saving changes, little psychological touches like the weight plates... all of that stuff matters because it tells us how DigiTech was thinking in that moment.
To me, the X-Series feels like the bridge between the earlier stompbox years and the more polished direction DigiTech would eventually take later on. It was practical, experimental, and just quirky enough to stay interesting all these years later.
Oh, and here's a fun one =)
Some early X-Series pedals reportedly contained steel weight plates taped inside the bottom cover. They weren't there for tone or durability. They were simply added to make the pedal feel more substantial when somebody picked it up in a music store.
If you pick up one of these pedals and it feels lighter or heavier than another one, now you know why.
It's one of those tiny details most owners never knew existed, but collectors love discovering years later. Sometimes the most interesting part of a pedal isn't the circuit. It's the story behind the decisions that created it.
