FX40 Equalizer
All four cosmetic variants of the FX40,
from late 1983, late 1984, early 1986, and early 1987 (left to right)
The FX40 Equalizer was a six-band graphic equalizer voiced for guitar (100-3200 Hz). The FX40 was one of the original ten DOD FX-series pedals that debuted in 1982, and remained in production until it was replaced by the FX40B in mid-1987.
- Controls:
sliders (+/- 18 dB) for Level and 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 Hz
- From the manual (shared with the FX42): "These two effects pedals are graphic equalizers. Each slider boosts or cuts a one octave wide band. Each band is like a tone control which only affects a narrow part of the sound spectrum. ... The FX40 has six equalizing sliders and one level control slider. When the sliders are moved to change the sound, the pattern made by the slider knobs graphically shows the equalization curve created by the pedal. The graphic equalizer allows you to change the sound or tone of your instrument and effects, lets you get more gain from your P.A. system before feedback, and lets you compensate for inadequacies in your P.A. The level slider lets you adjust the output of the graphic equalizer to make up for the equalization you apply."
- FX40-specific cosmetic changes:
The FX40 was originally painted beige with black text and graphics. Its "bars" graphics were replaced by "block" graphics in mid-1984, and in mid-1985 the color scheme was changed to a grey basecoat with red graphics.
